As part of the SLRB's keenness to develop its human resources and cope with technological advances worldwide in survey, the SLRB recently organized a training course for a number of its engineers and surveyors.

Engineer Haytham Al Hussaini, of Trimble Company, trained 50 engineers and surveyors from the Topographic Survey and Land Survey Directorates on a number of GPS equipment and monitoring devices attached to them. The training course came on the heels of acquisition of GPS by the SLRB from Trimble which is a leading company in providing and supplying survey equipment. The course featured a theoretical side and a practical side, consisting of lectures and field training.

The Topographical Survey Directorate said the GPS equipment works using receiving frequencies received from satellites of the systems themselves, and that they contain a spot projection of maps. The equipment uses Windows system and is supported by Bluetooth. Survey information is collected and monitored to issue maps by fixing vertical and horizontal terrestrial points, with the possible control of data and quality control, in addition to receiving and exporting software to CAD and GIS.
